In Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, customers voted us the top grant of £12,000 – all raised from revenue generated by the 5p charge for single-use carrier bags. Our Workhouse Wood project was short-listed from hundreds of applications for the Greenwich region. This is a fantastic achievement.

We had a dream for the woodland that had lain behind a battered corrugated-iron fence for decades . . . We wanted to give the whole community a beautiful green space to enjoy . . .

. . . so we took the fence down, and we made a path

We put bird boxes all over the site, which is also a haven for wild-life. And many interesting features, which are still visible, survive from the old Woolwich Union Workhouse, but there is still much to be done . . . see our project plan here.

- to bring in tree specialists to make the woodland safer

- to create a Tree Trail and a Forest School Classroom in a woodland glade

- to create and install interpretive signs and seats where people can enjoy the peace and listen to the birds

- to create safe access for those less able
